The new king of high Cs, American Tenor Bryan Hymel will introduce himself at the Smetana Hall in arias from operas in which he excels on world’s front stages. Bryan Hymel is considered one of the opera world’s fastest-rising stars. He is a sought-after artist, awarded with several prestigious prizes, including Beverly Sills Artist Award in the USA (2012), British Olivier Award for his interpretation of Énée (Berlioz: Les Troyens), Robert (Meyerbeer: Robert le diable), and Prince (Dvořák: Rusalka) in Covent Garden (2013); most recently he also received Echo Klassik (2015) for his new CD Héroïque: French Opera Arias. He recorded this first solo CD with PKF – Prague Philharmonia and Emmanuel Villaume in August 2014 in Prague for the label Warner Classics (exclusive recording artist since 2014).

Although Bryan Hymel made an successful debut in La Scala and Covent Garden as Don Don José (Bizet: Carmen) in 2010, his real entrée among world opera elite came when he stepped in for Jonas Kaufmann as Énée in Les Troyens in Covent Garden’s new production of the opera (premiere on 25th June 2012); in December of the same year he sang stepped in the same role for Marcello Giordani in Metropolitan Opera New York. Thousands of people all over the world were able to view Hymel’s excellent job within the Live in HD series on 5th January 2013. Since then, he is a regular guest of all front world opera and concert stages on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Bryan Hymel grew up in the home of jazz, New Orleans. As a child, he took piano and trumpet lessons and he was preparing for a career as a conductor on Broadway until one of his teachers pointed him to the world of opera. Bryan Hymel graduated from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and was a participant in San Francisco Opera Center’s Merola Program.
At his Prague concert, he will sing some arias from the above mentioned CD Héroïque: French Opera Arias. Reviews on this CD note that the tenor’s voice safely raises to some extremely high notes – the CD includes 19 high Cs, two high C minors and even one high D in the aria of Vasco da Gama from Meyerbeer’s L'Africaine! Bryan Hymel will perform in Prague with his wife, Greek soprano Irini Kyriakidou. PKF – Prague Philharmonia will be conducted by the Italian conductor Paolo Bressan.
