Like an Art Nouveau ship, the Municipal House gently rocks on the shores of France. From the silence, waves slowly emerge, joyfully leaping over one another before calming down. In a gust of wind, they rise again and crash into a deafening fortissimo, only to recede once more. These are the waves of Debussy’s The Sea. Amid their whispering, the familiar rhythm of a waltz breaks through, gradually building into a roar. Then Ester Pavlů steps aboard, and Ravel’s storm gives way to her tender mezzo-soprano in Summer Nights. With the charismatic Sascha Goetzel—chief conductor in France and Canada—navigating the waters of French repertoire, we surely won’t be lost at sea. A sip of wine, and the summer nights can begin.
